HerbWords 1.2 is an educational software
program that pronounces basic Traditional Chinese Medical words with
definitions and shows many of the most useful acupuncture points,
patent medicines and conditions they are used to treat. It has two new
search features in version 1.2 that will search the entire program for
a specified word or string of characters and repeat the search with the
enter or return key continuously. This means searching as fast as you
can push a key and read! It is laid out in 5 sections: Herbs,
Dictionary, Acupuncture, Patent Medicines and Help with 5 diagnostic
tests. It is highly recommended that the book "Between
Heaven and Earth" be used as a study guide with the
program.

The new diagnostic portion has five testing modules: The Four Examinations, Eight Principles, Syndrome test, Organ Network test and a Five Phase test based on physiological and psychological analysis. Also included are a Western Medical Dictionary, easy Cross Reference for main symptoms and a powerful Indications, Formula and Protocol sections.
This software program is an interactive compilation from some of the best text available on this subject. In the fall of 1996, HerbalGram published an article listing the 20 most sold medicinal herbs in China (HerbalGram Number 38 Fall 1996). These are the 20 herbs in this program. Each herb has a color picture, the common Pin Yin and Pharmacopoeia name that may be clicked on to hear each pronunciation.
Each herb also has a scrolling materia medica field taken from The East West Herb Course by Michael Tierra L.Ac. O.M.D. with Lesley Tierra L.Ac. Included is: Herb family, Other names, Part used, Energy and Tastes, Organs and Meridians affected, Chemical Constituents, Properties, Uses, Dosage, and various notes on applications.
The Acupuncture, Patent Medicine, Theory and Formula sections with the 5 Phase, Syndrome and Organ test are taken from Between Heaven and Earth by Harriet Beinfield L.Ac. and Efrem Korngold L.Ac. O.M.D. The acupuncture section is designed with point and click fields and graphics that cross reference descriptions of exact locations of points and the conditions they are used to treat. The patent medicine section lists 50 common patents and the conditions they treat. The Protocol section is also from these authors.
The Chinese Dictionary section is selected text from The Web That Has No Weaver by Ted Kaptchuk O.M.D. on Chinese theory, physiology and meridians with pronunciations and definitions.
